Distinguished and Famous people from Brisbane and Surrounds

Brisbane and its surrounding communities have shaped writers, reformers and educators in different ways. These stories distinguish work in the city from childhood and cultural work on Minjerribah, in Moreton Bay.

🤝 Emma Miller

Emma Miller arrived in Brisbane in 1879 and earned her living through sewing. She helped organise women workers and became foundation president of the Woman's Equal Franchise Association, campaigning for adult suffrage. Her later work included peace activism and opposition to conscription. In Brisbane's 1912 general strike she led women towards Parliament House, a documented public action around which colourful hatpin stories later grew. Her long involvement in the city's labour movement earned her the name “Mother Miller”.

📚 David Malouf

David Malouf grew up in South Brisbane and studied at Brisbane Grammar School and the University of Queensland. The city became a lasting presence in his writing, including Johnno and 12 Edmondstone Street. His career encompassed poetry, fiction, essays and opera libretti, with the Miles Franklin Award for The Great World among his honours. Later years elsewhere did not erase that early setting: his Brisbane childhood remained material for literary work.

📚 Oodgeroo Noonuccal

Oodgeroo Noonuccal grew up on Minjerribah, also known as North Stradbroke Island, in Moreton Bay. Known earlier as Kath Walker, she combined poetry with advocacy for Aboriginal rights and education. Her collection We Are Going appeared in 1964. Returning to Minjerribah in 1971, she taught Aboriginal culture to visiting children and produced books including Stradbroke Dreamtime. Her place in this regional overview rests especially on the island's enduring role in her life and teaching.
